Engineering the Sleep Environment

The physical space in which you sleep dictates the biological limits of your recovery. While CBT-I addresses the psychological, and CPAP addresses the mechanical airway, environmental optimization addresses the sensory inputs that modulate the autonomic nervous system.

The Three Pillars of Environmental Control

1. Thermal Regulation

Sleep onset is triggered by a drop in core body temperature. A bedroom that is too warm prevents this drop, causing prolonged sleep latency (time to fall asleep) and fragmented REM. 2. Acoustic Masking

It is not necessarily loud noises that wake you, but the change in noise level from the baseline (the signal-to-noise ratio). Raising the acoustic floor of the bedroom using white or pink noise masks transient sounds (dogs barking, traffic). Continuous pink noise has also been shown in some small studies to increase the amplitude of slow waves during deep sleep.

3. Photon Management

Melatonin synthesis is exquisitely sensitive to light, specifically in the blue/cyan spectrum (roughly 480nm), which triggers the intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs).
