Circadian Light Therapy and Phase Shifting

The master clock in the brain (the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus, or SCN) is synchronized to the 24-hour solar day almost entirely by light exposure. By strategically timing exposure to high-intensity light (lux), you can force a phase advance (waking up earlier) or a phase delay (waking up later).

The Physics of the Photoreceptors

The receptors in the eye responsible for circadian timing (ipRGCs) are most sensitive to short-wavelength light—specifically blue/cyan light around 480 nanometers. Standard indoor lighting is typically around 100-300 lux, which is sufficient to suppress melatonin at night but entirely insufficient to anchor the circadian rhythm in the morning.

Protocols for Phase Shifting

To effectively shift the clock (for shift work, jet lag, or delayed sleep phase syndrome), you need a light box capable of delivering 10,000 lux at a comfortable distance (usually 16-24 inches).

Safety and Contraindications

Individuals with bipolar disorder must consult a physician before using 10,000 lux light therapy, as it can precipitate manic episodes. Those with retinal conditions should avoid intense blue-spectrum light.
