Analyzing Portable CPAP Technology
Travel CPAP machines sacrifice humidification capacity and acoustic dampening to achieve a smaller form factor. We evaluate the core tradeoffs.
Acoustic Profile
The motor in a travel unit like the ResMed AirMini spins at a much higher RPM than the AirSense 10/11 to generate the same pressure. This results in a higher-pitched whine that many patients find disruptive. Our acoustic analysis indicates a 4-7 dB increase at the patient's ear compared to bedside units.
Humidification Compromises
Standard CPAPs use a heated water chamber. Travel units rely on Heat Moisture Exchangers (HMEs)—small discs that capture exhaled moisture and return it on the next inhalation. While effective for short trips, HMEs cannot match the absolute humidity delivered by an active heated system, often leading to nasal dryness on longer deployments.
